He was the first African American and the first Democrat to chair the committee. He is the dean of Mississippi’s congressional delegation.
Thompson has served as the sole Democrat in Mississippi’s congressional delegation since 2011. His district encompasses the bulk of Jackson and is the state’s only majority-black district.
It stretches for around 275 miles (443 kilometres) and is 180 miles (290 kilometres) wide, bordering the Mississippi River. The Mississippi Delta makes up the lion’s share of the district.

Thompson has a strong liberal voting record; he is by far the most liberal member of the Mississippi delegation, and perhaps one of the most liberal congressmen to represent the state ever.
Thompson has served as the chair of the Committee on Homeland Security since 2019 and previously from 2007 to 2011.
Thompson focused on ensuring that state and local officials, as well as first responders (fire, police, and EMTs), had the resources they needed to safeguard their communities during his time as chairman of the Homeland Security Committee.
