BBC Antiques Roadshow director Nicky Illis Dead at 53

BBC Antiques Roadshow director Nicky Illis has tragically passed away at the age of 53 in April 2024.

The seasoned TV director, known for her work on popular shows like Antiques Roadshow and Fake or Fortune, lost her battle with cancer.

Illis leaves behind her husband Seb and their two children, Luke and Eliza. She began her career in the television industry on The Late Show in the 1990s before moving on to direct history programs such as One Foot in the Past and The House Detectives.

In 2009, Illis played a pivotal role in developing and producing the investigative art show Fake or Fortune, where she went on to produce and direct ten series.

Colleagues and friends have paid heartfelt tributes to Illis, with former colleague Fiona Bruce leading the remembrance. Bruce described Illis as “irreplaceable,” praising her talent, exuberance, enthusiasm, and sense of fun.

Robert Murphy, series editor of Fake or Fortune, reminisced about Illis’s vibrant presence in the office, recalling her arrival with coffee in hand and a bag full of art books, ready to tackle another mystery. Murphy expressed that Illis’s absence has left a void in the team and that she will be dearly missed.
