The show, inspired by the success of Star Wars, aired in 1978 and solidified Carter’s status as a prominent figure in science-fiction television.

In addition to his acting career, Carter was nominated for an Emmy award in 1989 for producing and directing the TV musical documentary A Duke Named Ellington, which explored the life and work of jazz legend Duke Ellington.

Carter’s diverse body of work also included roles in films like Foxy Brown and Benji, as well as creating a documentary about African-American anthropologist Katherine Dunham.

He even ventured into broadcast journalism as a TV anchor newscaster for WBZ-TV Eyewitness News in Boston in 1965.

On Broadway, Carter showcased his talents in productions such as Mrs Patterson, the revival of the musical Finian’s Rainbow, and Kwamina, where he starred opposite British actress Sally Ann Howes.

Terry Carter is survived by his wife Etaferhu Zenebe-DeCoste, his two children Miguel and Melinda, and Mrs. Zenebe-DeCoste’s daughter.
