Bat Girl Movie Cancelled: Why was the Batgirl movie Cancelled?

Warner Bros Discovery has unexpectedly announced that the previously announced Batgirl film will not be released at all, even though filming has already been completed and the film is in post-production.

The film, directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, was originally greenlit in 2021 as part of a larger Warner Bros. initiative to create feature films specifically for the streaming service HBO Max.

However, on Tuesday, August 2, 2022, the studio confirmed that the film would never be released, either theatrically or on HBO Max.

According to reports, the cost of shooting Batgirl during the Covid-19 pandemic increased the budget to nearly $90 million (£74.1 million, A$130 million).

While the budget is lower than that of the average DC superhero film, it was reportedly decided that it lacked the “spectacle that audiences have come to expect from DC fare” and would not recoup its losses if released.

Warner Bros. decided to cut its losses because the film had performed so poorly in early test screenings making it one of the highest-budget movies in history to be produced, but not released.
