Barton Holan Bryant was born on November 18, 1962, in Gatesville, Texas, United States. His father is a Baptist pastor. He graduated from New Mexico State University where he was a two-time All-American as a member of the golf team.

Bart Bryant has an elder brother named Brad Bryant. Brad has won on both the PGA Tour and the Champions Tour. Bart Bryant turned professional in 1986. Bart Bryant graduated from PGA Tour Q School six times before his win on his 187th start at the 2004 Valero Texas Open.
Bart Bryant played at the 2012 FedEx St. Jude Classic, and became was the oldest first-time winner on the PGA tour in nine years. He won the Memorial Tournament and the season-ending Tour Championship in 2005.
