Barcelona announced in a statement that the club will not be able to keep Messi at Campo Nou, with the Argentine set to leave after joining the Catalan side when he was 13 years old.

In the statement, they mentioned that the two parties had come to an agreement over financial terms and a contract extension, but the economic and structural rules posed by LaLiga’s economic controls have made the unfortunate happen.

Part of the statement read; “Despite having reached an agreement between FC Barcelona and Leo Messi, with a clear intention of both parties to sign a new contract, it can be formalised due to economic and structural obstacles”.
The team expressed their gratitude to Messi for his contribution to the greatness of the club and wishes him all the best for the future in his personal and professional life.
