Barbara Everitt Bryant Parents: Meet William Littell Everitt

William Littell Everitt was the father of Barbara Everitt Bryant an American market researcher who led the United States Census Bureau for the first time.

William Littell Everitt was a well-known electrical engineer, educator, and National Academy of Engineering founder.

William Littell Everitt was born in the city of Baltimore, Maryland. He served in the United States Marine Corps from 1918 to 1919 before enrolling at Cornell University to study electrical engineering, where he received his E.E. degree in 1922.

He studied electrical engineering at the University of Michigan, where he received his M.A. in 1926.  He then became an assistant professor at Ohio State University (OSU), later becoming an associate professor (1929) and full professor (1933) after receiving his Ph.D. from Frederic Blake.

William Littell Everitt was a radar pioneer and the author of fundamental texts on radio engineering and communication during his long career.

He developed automatic telephones, a “time compressor” to speed up recorded speech, high-power radio amplification, a frequency modulation radio altimeter, and several antenna matching and feeding systems.

William Littell Everitt was also a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Society for Engineering Education, the Acoustical Society of America, Eta Kappa Nu, the National Council of Tau Beta Pi, and Sigma Xi, and he received ten honorary doctorates.
