Barbara Everitt Bryant was an American market researcher who led the United States Census Bureau for the first time.

Barbara Everitt Bryant died on Friday, March 3 2023, at age 96. One of her daughters, Linda Bryant Valentine, confirmed to NPR that Bryant died of natural causes surrounded by her family in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Barbara Everitt was born in the Michigan city of Ann Arbor. She graduated as valedictorian from high school and pursued her undergraduate studies in physics at Cornell University, graduating in 1947.

Her goal in studying physics was to become a science writer, and after graduating, she worked as an editor for Chemical Engineering magazine in New York City.

From 1989 to 1993, Barbara Everitt Bryant the United States Census Bureau, which included the 1990 United States Census and later oversaw the American Customer Satisfaction Index.

She left the Census Bureau in 1993 to become a research scientist at the University of Michigan School of Business and the director of the American Customer Satisfaction Index.

In 1998, Bryant was elected as a fellow of the American Statistical Association. She received the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research’s Warren E. Miller Award for Meritorious Service to the Social Sciences in 2007.
