John D. Cooper was the husband of Barbara Cooper an American politician who served in the Tennessee House of Representatives for the 86th District as a Democrat.

The couple got married in 1972 and divorced in 2005. They had three children. Barbara Cooper passed away in October 2022, at the age of 93.
Barbara Cooper Cooper received her high school diploma from Manassas High School in Memphis, Tennessee.
She also received a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Education from Tennessee State University.
She is a retired teacher from Memphis City Schools. Cooper received his Doctorate of Religious Philosophy in Christian psychology from Jacksonville Theological Seminary in 1999.

Cooper has served in the Tennessee House of Representatives since the 100th General Assembly. She recently served as the Vice Chair of the House Government Operations Committee.
She was running for re-election to the District 86 seat in the upcoming November 8, 2022, history-maker Representatives election.
Representative Cooper was not only the oldest legislator in Tennessee when she died but also the second-oldest state legislator in the country and the oldest Democrat.
