With an initial 50% score on Rotten Tomatoes based on the first 18 critic reviews, the film’s reception leans toward the “rotten” end of the spectrum, signifying a divisive response among reviewers.

Directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson and featuring Marisa Abela as Winehouse, the biopic purportedly traces the trajectory of the singer’s career until her untimely demise in 2011 at the age of 27.

Scheduled to premiere in U.K. cinemas on April 12 2024 and in U.S. theaters on May 17, “Back to Black” has already become a subject of contention.

Hamish Macbain, a prominent critic for the London Evening Standard, expressed profound disappointment, describing the film as “so bad it made me gasp in horror,” citing significant “moral and ethical problems” and a failure to adequately delve into Winehouse’s rapid rise to fame.

Addressing the online uproar surrounding the biopic, other critics weighed in. Despite acknowledging the controversy surrounding the film, Variety’s Gleiberman defended Abela’s portrayal of Winehouse, asserting that she embodied the essence of the iconic singer.

Meanwhile, The Independent’s Charlotte O’Sullivan, in a two-star review, disputed claims of the film being “trauma porn,” asserting that it offered a nuanced portrayal rather than sensationalism.

As anticipation builds for its release, “Back to Black” continues to navigate the delicate balance between honoring Winehouse’s legacy and addressing the ethical considerations inherent in portraying her complex life on screen.
