Former Black Stars striker, Augustine Arhinful, has joined the chorus advocating for significant improvements in the quality of pitches at various stadiums, especially those used by national football teams.

He made this statement during an interview with Citi Sports at the launch of the 2024 Ghana Football Awards, which coincided shortly after Ghana’s National Men’s Football Team defeated Central African Republic 4-3.
The victory occurred in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi, where Black Stars head coach Otto Addo criticized the condition of the pitch. Black Stars captain Thomas Partey also urged Vice President of Ghana, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, to improve the playing surface at the venue.

When asked about the significant issue, Augustine Arhinful expressed that despite the challenges, Ghana’s two largest venues should maintain a high-quality playing surface.
“I believe it’s a right call. At least we have Kumasi Sports Stadium Baba Yara-we have Accra Sports Stadium, if we are capable of changing the entire grass on these pitches…and then have proper maintenance people on the pitch, I think we will always be smiling,” Augustine Arhinful said.
