Azu Muguruza: Who Is Ander Barrenetxea’s Mother?

Azu Muguruza, the mother of Spanish footballer Ander Barrenetxea, is a Women’s basketball coach with over 20 years experience.

Born in 1968, Azu began coaching at the Ibaeta Sports Club, and remains “one of the first female professional coaches in the women’s basketball league.”

Azu has won several awards including the Best Coach in Spain award for many seasons.

In her early days, she had earned a degree in Physical Activity and Sports Sciences (INEF) from the University of the Basque Country.

In 2018, Azu was selected to be part of the technical team of the under 20 team. She assisted in coaching the Spanish women’s basketball team to victory, with the team winning the gold medal in the European Championship.

Her son, Ander Barrenetxea is a professional footballer who plays as a winger for Real Sociedad, a club in La Liga, the top tier of Spanish football.

Andre has also represented Spain at the 2019 UEFA European Under-19 Championship, in which Spain had won Portugal 2–0 in the final and emerged winners of the competition.
