He achieved this title on July 15, 2007, making him one of the youngest players in history to attain the title of Grandmaster. His rapid progression and early success in the chess world marked him as a prodigious talent.

Caruana is the third-highest-rated player in history, with a peak rating of 2844. Caruana, a chess prodigy, represented the United States until 2005, when he switched to Italy’s national federation.

Caruana qualified for the Candidates Tournament 2016 by winning the FIDE Grand Prix 2014-15. He finished second against Sergey Karjakin. He won the 2018 Candidates Tournament, becoming the first American to challenge Bobby Fischer for the undisputed World Chess Championship since 1972.
