Historically, the Australia Stock Market Index (AU200) reached an all time high of 7632.80 in August of 2021.

The S&P/ASX 200 Index rose 0.1% to close at 7,483, extending gains in the previous session as the big four banks advanced on the prospect of higher interest rates.
Investors are betting that expected rate hikes from the Reserve Bank of Australia can help banks reverse a long-running squeeze on their profit margins.

Commonwealth Bank shares jumped 1.4%, followed by National Australia Bank (1.5%), ANZ Bank (0.7%) and Westpac Banking (0.6%). Gold and lithium miners also advanced including Newcrest Mining (2.1%), Northern Star Resources (3.9%), Evolution Mining (1.6%), Lake Resources (7%), IGO Ltd (2.3%) and Perseus Mining (4.8%).
Meanwhile, technology stocks tracked losses on Wall Street, with losses from Aristocrat Leisure (-1.4%), Block Inc (-2.3%), Xero Ltd (-0.6%), Nextdc Ltd (-2.5%) and Brainchip Holdings (-4.7%).
The S&P/ASX 200 is the most important stock market index which tracks the performance of 200 large companies based in Australia. It is a market-capitalization weighted and float-adjusted index.
