Aston “Family Man” Barrett, the legendary bassist renowned for his pivotal role in Bob Marley and the Wailers, has sadly passed away at the age of 77. The news was confirmed by Jamaica’s Minister for Culture, Olivia Grange, who expressed deep regret over Barrett’s demise.

Aston Barrett’s passing comes shortly before the release of the Bob Marley biopic, “Bob Marley: One Love,” where his character will be portrayed by his son, Aston Barrett Jr. Barrett’s legacy endures through his influential contributions to reggae music.

Aston “Family Man” Barrett’s musical journey began by singing along to soul tunes on the radio, later transitioning to the bass guitar. Notably, Barrett crafted his first bass guitar from plywood, a curtain rod, and an old ashtray.

In a 2007 interview with Bass Player magazine, Aston “Family Man” Barrett described his approach to playing the bass as akin to singing, stating, “When I’m playing the bass, it’s like I’m singing. I compose a melodic line and see myself like I’m singing baritone.”
