Ashaiman District ECG Discovers 130 Unauthorized Electrical Connections

In an effort to bolster revenue collection and curb illegal electrical connections, the Ashaiman District of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has uncovered a total of 130 unauthorized connections within its operational area over a three-day period.

The initiative, which forms part of a broader revenue mobilization project, commenced on Monday, March 4, 2024, with dedicated teams deployed to identify and address illicit connections.

Providing insight into the progress of the operation, Ing. Kissi Ohenebeng, the District Manager, emphasized that swift action was taken upon discovery, with summons issued to offending customers starting from Tuesday, March 5, 2024, to rectify the identified infractions.

Over the course of the three-day endeavor, the district, with assistance from personnel from eight neighboring districts and the regional office of the Tema Region, reached out to over 5000 customers to ensure compliance and rectify any irregularities.

Ing. Ohenebeng reiterated the gravity of illegal connections, labeling them as tantamount to theft and emphasizing the company’s commitment to exploring legal avenues, including prosecution, for defaulting customers.

He urged customers to refrain from such activities, warning of the potential repercussions.

The Ashaiman District, situated within the Tema Region, encompasses various districts, including Tema North, Tema South, Afienya, Prampram, Ada, Nungua, Juapong, and Krobo.

Personnel from across the region were mobilized to support the special revenue mobilization exercise in Ashaiman, underscoring the collective commitment to addressing this issue.

Ing. Daniel Asare-Mensah, Acting General Manager of the ECG Tema Region, emphasized the importance of timely payment for consumed power to avoid debt accumulation.

He announced the conclusion of the Ashaiman exercise by the close of Friday, March 8, 2024, with plans to replicate similar initiatives in other districts, including Afienya and Prampram, in the near future.

The concerted efforts of the ECG underscore a commitment to integrity, transparency, and accountability in the provision of electricity services, safeguarding both the interests of consumers and the sustainability of the power distribution network.
