Ash Carter Obituary

Ash Carter was a public policy professor in the United States who served as the 25th Secretary of Defense from February 2015 to January 2017.

Ash Carter was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on September 24, 1954. Carter started out as a physicist.

He moved into public policy after a brief stint as an analyst for the Congressional Office of Technology Assessment.

Ash Carter served as Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology, and Logistics during President Obama’s first term, and then as Deputy Secretary of Defense until December 2013.

He succeeded Chuck Hagel as Secretary of Defense in February 2015 and served until the end of the Obama administration.

During his tenure at the department, he was notable for lifting the ban on transgender military officers, which had been in place for only a year before being reinstated by the Trump administration.

Carter received the DOD Distinguished Public Service Medal five times for his contributions to national security.

Ashton Carter died on Monday, October 24, 2022, night in Boston of a “sudden cardiac event,” according to his family. He is survived by his wife, Stephanie, and his children, Ava and Will.
