Former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan, has lauded Andre Ayew’s leadership during his time as captain of the Black Stars.

Gyan served as captain of the national team from 2014 to 2019, after which coach Kwasi Appiah passed the captaincy to Ayew in 2019.
Ayew has since led the Black Stars in three Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournaments and one FIFA World Cup. However, the team has been eliminated at the group stage in each of their last three major tournaments.
Despite criticism and the team’s limited success in major tournaments under Ayew’s leadership, Gyan, who played alongside Ayew during his captaincy, expressed on Asempa FM‘s Ultimate Sports Show that he believes Ayew has been a strong leader.
“Andre is a good leader. I have played with him and been with him at Black Stars camp. With some of the things he does for the team, he has been good so far. It is a different era but it has been good so far.”

“Everyone has his style of leadership. Everyone saw what I did when I was the captain. And now it’s Andre’s time and his colleagues have gotten to know how he does his things,” Gyan added.

Meanwhile, Gyan also believes that no Ghanaian player currently matches Mohammed Kudus’ level, advocating for the Black Stars to be structured around the West Ham midfielder.
“So far it is obvious, when I say it’s obvious I mean you know, Mohammed Kudus. When I was coming up, we had Michael Essien, Stephen Appiah, Sulley Muntari and at a point it got to me. Players have come and gone. We had the Abedi Pele era, Stephen Appiah era, Michael Essien era and the Asamoah Gyan era and now it looks like it’s Kudus’ era,” Gyan indicated.
