Mayor John Tecklenburg released the following statement upon hearing of the passing of former congressman and state senator Arthur Ravenel, Jr.:

“Cousin Arthur loved Charleston in his bones, and Charleston loved him back. Over 95 remarkable years, he was a Marine, a business leader, a family man, and a distinguished public servant at every level of government.”
“Put simply, he was living in full — a life of joy and meaning and consequence — and he will be much missed.”
According to the South Carolina State House, he served as a state senator from 1981 to 1985 and then from 1997 to 2003. He also served in the U.S. Congress from 1987 to 1995.
Arthur Ravenel was a supporter of the Confederate flag flying at the South Carolina statehouse and a member of Moultrie Camp, Sons of Confederate Veterans.
He sparked outrage in 2000 when he referred to the NAACP as the “National Association for Retarded People” in response to a reporter’s question.
