Arthur Leong: Chinese-born New Zealand footballer dead at 92

International association football player Arthur Leong (1931–31 August 2023) played for New Zealand. He was born in Guangzhou, China, and immigrated to New Zealand when he was two years old. He was the first member of an ethnic Chinese community to play football for New Zealand.

Leong played two official A-international matches for the All Whites in 1962 against visitors New Caledonia, winning the first 4-1 on June 2 and the second 4-2 on June 4. He also won the Chatham Cup as captain of Hamilton Technical Old Boys on September 1 at The Basin Reserve, Wellington, defeating Northern 4-1. As New Zealand would not play any other official matches until 1967, these were to be his only games.

With the passing of Arthur Leong today, a former Chatham Cup-winning player-coach of Technical Old Boys (Hamilton) and All White, Waikato football has lost one of its pioneering giants. Leong, who was 92 years old, may have been the oldest All White still alive. After a protracted illness, he passed away quietly.
