Armed macho men ‘force’ EC official to register 2 ‘students’ in Ashanti Region

Violence erupted at a voter registration center in the Adu Gyama area of the Ahafo Ano South East constituency in the Ashanti region on May 11, 2024, during the ongoing voter registration exercise.

According to a report from myjoyonline.com, armed individuals stormed the registration center brandishing clubs, machetes, and other weapons, leading to clashes between opposing factions and leaving two individuals injured.

The altercation reportedly began when two students, allegedly brought to the center for registration by a representative of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), were contested by political party agents and local residents who questioned their eligibility.

Despite initial attempts to resolve the issue peacefully, the situation escalated with the arrival of armed individuals who intensified the confrontation.

The armed group reportedly coerced the Electoral Commission (EC) official present to register the students, leading to clashes with opposing parties.

As a result of the altercation, two individuals sustained injuries, including wounds to their neck and arms. They were promptly transported to St. Mankraso Hospital in the constituency for medical treatment.

The incident prompted an abrupt halt to the voter registration exercise at the center.
