His father, John Sr., immediately began calling him Skip, his father also had called his mother “Skip”, as in “skipper of the ship”. The name instantly stuck, and Bayless was never called John by his parents, to the point that he eventually had his name legally changed to Skip.

While Skip’s junior brother Rick Bayless is an American chef and restaurateur who specializes in traditional Mexican cuisine with modern interpretations. He is widely known for his PBS series Mexico: One Plate at a Time.

Among his various accolades are a Michelin star, the title of Top Chef Masters, and seven James Beard Awards.

In 1991, Skip began a two-year stint hosting a sports talk radio show from 6–8 p.m. Monday through Friday for Dallas radio station KLIF.
