He is best known for his roles as Iceman/Bobby Drake in the X-Men film series, Jake Berenson in the TV drama Animorphs, Agent Mike Weston in The Following, Eric in the horror film The Ruins, Sam Spencer in the ABC drama Conviction, Wesley Evers in the ABC drama The Rookie, and Lamplighter in the Amazon Prime Video superhero series The Boys.

As Conrad and Jack Joyce in the 2016 video game Quantum Break and the 2019 film Man of Medan, respectively, Ashmore has also donated his talents to the world of video games. He is notable since he is Aaron Ashmore’s twin brother.

Ashmore had a significant role as Iceman in the X-Men films, particularly X2 and X-Men: The Last Stand. He also gave the voice for the part in the animated program The Super Hero Squad Show and the video game X-Men: The Official Game.
