She is the daughter of Powell Grisette Potts and Dorothy Harris Potts. Her older sisters are Mary Eleanor Potts and Elizabeth Grissette Potts. They grew raised in Franklin, Kentucky, where she graduated from Franklin-Simpson High School in 1970.

Annie Potts earned a Bachelor of Arts in theatre from Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri. Potts gained widespread recognition for her role as Janine Melnitz, the quirky and witty secretary in the popular comedy film “Ghostbusters” (1984) and its sequel “Ghostbusters II” (1989).
