Charles Robert Darwin was an English naturalist, geologist, and biologist, best known for his contributions to evolutionary biology. He was born on February 12, 1809, and died on  April 19, 1882. Darwin’s wife was called Emma and was a devout Christian who was upset by her husband’s lack of faith.

Charles Darwin and his wife experienced the loss of many of their children, but some biographers say that, in particular, facing the death of their oldest daughter, Annie, gave Darwin deeper insight into the nature of evolution and helped Emma come to terms with her husband’s work.

Annie Darwin was just ten when she died from what was probably tuberculosis.

“We have lost the joy of the Household,” Darwin wrote, “and the solace of our old age.” He was so stricken with grief that he couldn’t bring himself to attend her burial.
