Antonina Uccello was never married and had no children according to Jacqueline Gustafson, who is married to Uccello’s nephew, David Gustafson.

Jacqueline Gustafson said she once asked Uccello why she never married and Uccello responded, “I never met a man who deserved that much happiness.”

Antonina “Ann” Uccello died of natural causes Sunday, March 12 2023, at a hospital in Hartford.

Hartford celebrated its former mayor and alumna of the University of Saint Joseph in West Hartford. Ann (Antonina) Uccello made history in 1967 as the first female mayor to be elected in a capital city. She is shown with Lt. Gov. Susan Bysiewicz and Hartford Mayor Luke Bronin, among others, at the celebration.

Ann Uccello was the first woman mayor in the city’s history in 1967, as well as the first woman mayor of any municipality in Connecticut.

As mayor, she was best known for comforting city residents and helping to prevent riots after the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. in 1968.

She also worked to protect children from lead poisoning and helped create low- and moderate-income housing, according to the Hall of Fame.
