Residents of Anloga and Keta, coastal communities in Ghana’s Volta Region, are raising concerns about what they perceive as unfair billing practices by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

According to residents, the billing system is erratic and the charges are exorbitant, causing significant disruptions to their daily lives and negatively impacting local businesses.

In interviews, residents expressed frustration over receiving bills that far exceed their actual electricity consumption. Many reported sudden increases in charges without any explanation from ECG officials.

Emmanuel Gbli, a small business owner in Anloga, voiced his frustration, stating, “It’s becoming increasingly difficult to sustain my business with these outrageous electricity bills. I’ve tried to reason with ECG officials but to no avail. It’s like they don’t care about the impact on us.”

Martha, a resident of Keta, shared similar sentiments, saying, “We are constantly living in fear of receiving our electricity bills. It’s like a lottery; you never know what amount they’ll come up with next. This uncertainty is suffocating both households and businesses alike.”

Local community leaders have also criticized ECG, accusing the company of insensitivity and neglect. They argue that such billing practices undermine the economic stability of the communities and erode trust in public utilities.

In response to the outcry, ECG officials have pledged to investigate the matter. However, residents remain skeptical, citing previous assurances that have not led to meaningful change.

Businesses like Villa Amore Beach Resort and Aborigines Beach Resort are among those affected by the high billing.

The Volta Regional Public Relations Officer of ECG has urged residents to remain calm as the company works to rectify the situation.
