Angel Hernandez worked in the National League from 1991 to 1999, and has worked throughout MLB since 2000.

In August 2017, Detroit Tigers second baseman Ian Kinsler was fined $10,000 by MLB for saying that Hernández was a bad umpire who “needs to find another job.”

That notwithstanding, in the same year (2017), Angel Hernández filed an ultimately unsuccessful federal lawsuit against MLB, alleging that racial discrimination kept him from being promoted to crew chief and from umpiring World Series games.

Angel Hernandez has not umpired in a World Series since the 2002 and 2005 championships.

The most recent incident occurred in April 2022 in a game between the Philadelphia Phillies and Milwaukee Brewers.

After the Philadelphia Phillies and Milwaukee Brewers shut each other out for eight innings, Corey Knebel allowed the Brewers to plate the only run of the game in the top of the ninth.

But when the Phillies tried to rally in the bottom of the frame, Angel Hernandez, the home-plate umpire for Sunday (April 24, 2022) night’s game, called Schwarber out on strikes for the second time.

The shocking thing was that the pitch was clearly out of the strike zone.

After a long night of bad judgments by one of the game’s worst shot-callers, Schwarber boiled over, slammed his bat and helmet and lost it at Abel Hernandez.
