Not much information regarding his father, mother, siblings and early childhood are readily available to the general public. He developed an interest in photography at an early age. Andrew Quilty disclosed that he discovered his “bonafide purpose and fulfilment” after his visit to the nation of Afghanistan in 2013.

Andrew Quilty later decided to be permanently based in Kabul. He undertook an informal internship at Fairfax Media, where he later got full-time employment as a photojournalist at Fairfax Media. He left Fairfax in 2010 and became a freelance photographer in Sydney. However, he moved to New York and joined the Australian collective Oculi in 2007.

Andrew Quilty is the author of his first book, August in Kabul: America’s last days in Afghanistan. The book was published by Melbourne University Press in 2022. He was awarded the Gold Walkley in 2016 in recognition of the “The Man on the Operating Table” photograph.
