American Hall of Fame racing driver Wally Dallenbach, dies at 87

Renowned American Indy car racer Wally Dallenbach Sr. passed away on April 29, 202. He was 87 years old.

Dallenbach, who made 13 starts at the prestigious Indianapolis 500, was not only a racing legend but also the father of former NASCAR Cup Series driver Wally Dallenbach Jr. and multi-time Pikes Peak Hill Climb winner Paul Dallenbach.

Announcing his father’s passing on Instagram, Paul Dallenbach wrote, “The Dallenbach family regrets to announce the passing of Wally Dallenbach Sr. Wally peacefully passed away in his sleep April 29th almost 11 months after the passing of the love of his life Peppy “Annette” Dallenbach.”

Dallenbach Sr. commenced his Indy car career in 1965 and participated in his inaugural Indianapolis 500 in 1967. Over a span of 15 years, he made 180 Indy car starts, securing five victories and finishing as the runner-up in the standings in 1973.

Although his best Indianapolis 500 finish was fourth in 1976 and 1977, driving for Patrick Racing in both instances, Dallenbach’s contributions to motorsports extended beyond his racing achievements. Following his retirement from driving, he served as the competition director for CART from 1980 to 2004.

Dallenbach’s illustrious career earned him inductions into several esteemed halls of fame, including the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame, the Pikes Peak Hill Climb Hall of Fame, the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame, and the New Jersey Sports Hall of Fame.
