Amelle Berrabah, born on April 22, 1984, in Aldershot, Hampshire, is a British singer renowned for her time as a pivotal member of the Sugababes. Raised in a family of Moroccan descent, Amelle demonstrated her passion for music from a young age. Her family, owners of a kebab shop in Aldershot, faced tragedy when her father succumbed to cancer in 2002. Amelle, a graduate of The Connaught School in Aldershot, pursued her musical aspirations at the Academy of Contemporary Music in Guildford on a scholarship. During this period, she formed the group Boo2 with her sister Samiya.

Amelle’s breakthrough came in 2003 when she won Top of the Pops magazine’s Star Search, earning her the role of lead singer in a new group. Her journey into the music industry was marked by early recognition and performances, including a notable appearance at Party in the Park.

The album “Taller in More Ways,” featuring re-recorded vocals by Amelle, solidified her place in the Sugababes.

Despite challenges, including legal issues, Amelle’s era with the Sugababes witnessed tremendous success, with chart-topping singles like “About You Now” and “Walk This Way.” The group’s 2007 album “Change” secured the number one position on both the singles and albums charts simultaneously. Amelle’s contributions extended beyond her powerful vocals, as she was credited with co-writing five songs on the album.

Solo Success and Challenges

In the aftermath of the Sugababes’ album “Catfights and Spotlights,” Amelle embarked on a solo venture. Her collaboration with Tinchy Stryder on “Never Leave You” in 2009 marked a significant milestone, making her the first and only Sugababes member to achieve a solo number-one single. The track’s success demonstrated Amelle’s versatility and individual star power.

The Sugababes faced internal turmoil, leading to Amelle’s temporary withdrawal due to “severe nervous exhaustion.” Subsequent changes in the group’s lineup did not deter Amelle’s solo pursuits. Her involvement in the album “Sweet 7” and subsequent singles showcased her resilience despite the group’s challenges.

Continued Solo Career and Diverse Ventures

Amelle Berrabah’s solo journey continued beyond the Sugababes era. In 2011, the group took a break, allowing Amelle to focus on individual endeavors. Her solo career encompassed collaborations, reality show appearances, and a foray into theatre with the musical “Club Tropicana.”
