On Tuesday, Jan 3, 2023, Missouri carried out the execution of Amber Mclaughlin, a transgender who was convicted of a 2003 murder of ex-girlfriend Beverly Guenther and unsuccessfully sought clemency from the governor, Mike Parson.

McLaughlin was in a relationship with Beverly Guenther, whom she murdered.

McLauglin was apparently unable to come to terms with her relationship with Guenther coming to an end, leading to her showing up on numerous times at Guenther’s workplace.

McLaughlin’s pestering led to Guenther obtaining a restraining order against her.

On the night of Nov. 20, 2003, Guenther’s neighbors called the police after she failed to return home.

Officers went to her office building, where they found a broken knife handle near her car and a trail of blood.

A day later, McLaughlin led police to a location near the Mississippi River in St. Louis, where she dumped Guenther’s body.

According to authorities, Guenther was raped and stabbed repeatedly with a steak knife.

McLaughlin was convicted of first-degree murder in 2006. A judge sentenced McLaughlin to death after a jury deadlocked on the sentence.

In 2016, a court ordered a new sentencing hearing, but a federal appeals court panel reinstated the death penalty in 2021.
