Alvin Walker Obituary (1954-2022)

American professional football player, football coach and teacher, Alvin Walker, passed away in April 2022, at age 67.

Walker was a Canadian Football League (CFL) running back who played for the Montreal Alouettes and Ottawa Rough Riders in the 1980s.

He was a CFL All-Star in 1982 and 1983. His brother Cornelius Walker also played for the Rough Riders. He was drafted in 1976 to Houston Oilers and was released in training camp.

He signed with Green Bay Packers in 1985 and was released in training camp. He retired from professional football in August 1985.

Born in Houston, Texas on September 11, 1954, Walker played university football for Texas A&M. Walker was drafted by the Houston Oilers but was cut at training camp.

Walker worked as a teacher and continued to work out. In 1980, Walker moved to Canada to play for the Saskatchewan Roughriders but was traded to the Montreal Alouettes before the season began.

Walker played two seasons for Montreal, but was traded to Ottawa when Montreal signed David Overstreet.

He joined Ottawa in 1982 and played three seasons for Ottawa. He led the CFL in rushing yards in 1982 and 1983. In 1983, Walker set the Riders single-season rushing record with 1431 yards.

After retirement, Walker returned to Texas. Walker was a coach and science teacher at Murchison Middle School (Austin, Texas) in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Alvin “Skip” Walker was the manager of Hoover’s Cooking restaurant in Austin, Texas. He was married to Kimberly James Walker.
