Mr Akbari’s family was asked to pay a “final visit” to his prison on Wednesday, January 11 20223, and his wife said he had been moved to solitary confinement.

In 2019, the ex-deputy Iranian defence minister was arrested and convicted of spying for the United Kingdom, which he denied.

The execution was described as a “callous and cowardly act carried out by a barbaric regime” by UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

Mr Sunak said Iran’s rulers had “no respect for their own people’s human rights,” adding that his thoughts were with Alireza’s friends and family.

The execution would “not go unchallenged,” according to UK Foreign Secretary James Cleverly.

The Iranian judiciary’s official news outlet Mizan reported on Saturday that Alireza Akbari had been hanged, but did not specify the date.

The news came after Iran posted a video of Mr Akbari earlier this week showing what appeared to be forced confessions, and after the country’s intelligence ministry had described the British-Iranian as “one of the most important agents of the British intelligence service in Iran”.
