About Ali Bongo
Ali Bongo Ondimba is a member of the Gabonese Democratic Party, and the third president of Gabon who served from 2009 to 2023.
Born on February 9, 1959, in Congo-Brazaville, Bongo is the son of Omar Bongo, who was president of Gabon for 42 years (1967 – 2009).

He served as Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation (1989 – 1991), and held many leadership positions within the Gabonese Democratic Party (PDG), which is the ruling political party in Gabon.

Bongo also served as Minister of the Interior, and Minister of Defense (1999 – 2009).
In 2009, Bongo ran for the presidency of Gabon following the death of his father. He won the election amidst controversy and allegations of electoral fraud.
Since he came into power, his tenure has been marked by both domestic and international challenges.
In 2018, Bongo suffered a stroke while abroad, leading to increased concerns about his health and ability to rule.
In 2023, Bongo contested again for presidency, but was ousted by the military, following the results of the Gabonese general election.
