Former Kravis Center CEO Judith Mitchell informed CBS12 News that Dreyfoos died peacefully in his sleep at the Lourdes Noreen McKeen Residence in West Palm Beach.
Mitchell said in a statement;
“Alex was a great mentor to me and I truly owe my career to him, but also he became a great friend to me, my husband, and my entire family. I know he will be deeply missed by many, many people in the community.”
Dreyfoos, who was born in New York on March 22, 1932, was a generous philanthropist who is credited with developing West Palm Beach into the cultural center that it is today.
His legacy includes a high school named after him, and the city recently renamed Alexander W. Dreyfoos Way through West Palm Beach’s Arts and Entertainment District.

Dreyfoos was the only child of cellist Martha Bullard Whittemore Dreyfoos (1898-1977) and Apeda Studios photographer-inventor Alexander W. Dreyfoos Sr. (1876-1951).

In 1963, he co-founded Photo Electronics Company (PEC) with George W. Mergens to address issues in color print reproduction. They created the ground-breaking Video Color Negative Analyzer (VCNA) in Dreyfoos’ basement in Port Chester, New York, and subsequently established a factory in a former church in Connecticut. Eastman Kodak Corporation offered the VCNA globally.
Dreyfoos then designed the revolutionary LaserColor Printer and collaborated with his son, Robert Dreyfoos, in producing the Professional Video Analyzing Computer, a digital version of the VCNA for PEC (PVAC).
From 1973 to 1996, Dreyfoos was also the owner of WPEC TV-12, the ABC affiliate in West Palm Beach, Florida.
Dreyfoos held 10 US patents and numerous foreign patents for his ideas.
He is survived by his wife, Renate, daughter Catherine Dreyfoos Carter and son Robert Dreyfoos (Julie); grandchildren Michael Aron Carter (Morgan), Michelle Carter Fenimore (Brian), Travis Dreyfoos (Natalie) and Aron Dreyfoos (Lauren); and great-grandchildren Allison Fenimore, Grayson Carter and Landon Carter.
