Alex was fascinated by advanced baseball statistics (sabermetrics). Scherzer learned the value of sabermetrics from his brother and uses it to improve his game.
Alex was enrolled at Missouri in 2009, majoring in economics. In his spare time, he studied baseball metrics: BABIP, FIP, and WAR.

He was hired as an assistant financial analyst at Morgan Stanley’s St. Louis office in the spring of 2012. He studied finance and passed the necessary company exams months before his peers.
Max Scherzer refused to speak publicly about his brother when he died. “I’m not sure words can express how we feel. It’s extremely difficult, “Scherzer’s fiancée, Erica May, agreed.
“We’ll talk about it, but it’ll be difficult for both of us. We’re going through it together. Everybody is.”
Scherzer has dedicated every start since Alex’s death to his late brother. Max named his first son after his brother.
