Alex died by strangulation, inside the basement of their parent’s home.
Alex was fascinated by advanced baseball statistics (sabermetrics). Scherzer learned the value of sabermetrics from his brother and uses it to improve his game.
Max Scherzer refused to speak publicly about his brother when he died. “I’m not sure words can express how we feel. It’s extremely difficult, “Scherzer’s fiancée, Erica May, agreed.

Max had a special bond with his younger brother. Max was three years older than Alex, and he was born in 1984 with heterochromia, a condition that caused his eyes to be discoloured.
Max and Alex enjoyed playing whiffle ball in the backyard, basketball in the driveway, and ping pong in the basement.
They’d spend the summers at the family’s lake house 45 miles outside of St. Louis. They’d splash around in a creek bed, looking for frogs and crawdads.
Scherzer has dedicated every start since Alex’s death to his late brother. Max named his first son after his brother.
