Former Albany defensive lineman AJ Simon, who had hopes of being selected in the 2024 NFL draft, has tragically passed away at the age of 25, the school confirmed on Wednesday, April 17, 2024.

In a statement shared on social media, Albany expressed deep sorrow over Simon’s passing, remembering him as a remarkable individual and an outstanding teammate during his time with the football program.
“The UAlbany football program was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former student-athlete Amitral ‘AJ’ Simon this morning,” the statement read.
“AJ was a tremendous young man and even better teammate throughout his time at UAlbany. He was a role model both on and off the field, serving as a pillar to this program over the last two years. He will be profoundly missed.”
The cause of Simon’s death has not been disclosed at this time.

Simon’s exceptional performance on the field earned him first-team All-CAA honors after recording impressive stats with 55 tackles and 12.5 sacks in the previous season. ESPN had ranked him as the 448th prospect in the upcoming NFL draft.
Reflecting on Simon’s impact, Albany coach Greg Gattuso shared heartfelt words on social media, expressing his sorrow and extending condolences to the Simon family.
“Two joyous year coaching and becoming friends with AJ Simon,” Gattuso’s statement read. “My prayers are dedicated to the Simon family. I love you AJ and will always have a special place in my heart for #8.”
Simon, originally from Tobyhanna, Pennsylvania, played for two seasons at Albany after transferring from Bloomsburg University. His untimely passing has left a profound void in the Albany community and beyond.
