Elliott Silverstein, the accomplished director behind films like Cat Ballou and A Man Called Horse, as well as numerous television episodes, passed away last Friday at the age of 96. The news of his death was confirmed by his family, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

Before venturing into feature film direction, Silverstein built a substantial career in television, directing episodes for series such as Suspicion, The Twilight Zone, The Further Adventures of Ellery Queen, Route 66, Have Gun—Will Travel, Naked City, Dr. Kildare, and The Defenders. In addition to his television work, Silverstein directed plays at Brandeis University in his home state of Massachusetts, including one featuring the renowned conductor Leonard Bernstein.

Silverstein marked his feature-length directorial debut in 1965 with the comedic Western Cat Ballou, starring Jane Fonda and Lee Marvin. Marvin, who portrayed both Kid Shelleen and Tim Strawn, earned an Oscar for his performance. Notably, Silverstein played a pivotal role in the casting decisions, suggesting Marvin for the role after Kirk Douglas declined and threatening to quit if the actor was replaced. He also introduced the idea of incorporating Nat King Cole and Stubby Kaye as a Greek chorus framing device, a departure from the original script.
Throughout his career, Silverstein directed several other notable features, including The Happening (1967), A Man Called Horse (1970), The Car (1977), and Flashfire (1994).
Beyond his contributions behind the camera, Silverstein left a lasting impact on Hollywood. From November 1963 to April 1964, he chaired a committee for the Directors Guild of America that drafted the Bill of Creative Rights, a groundbreaking document addressing directors’ creative control. The bill, which Silverstein is credited with, includes a specific declaration about the Director’s Cut, emphasizing the director’s creative right and obligation to shape the final version. In recognition of his significant contributions, Silverstein was named an honorary life member of the guild in 1990.
