Alan Lass was an actor and film producer. In the 1940s and early 1950s, Ladd achieved success in films, particularly Westerns like Shane (1953) and film noir. In noir films such as This Gun for Hire (1942), The Glass Key (1942), and The Blue Dahlia (1942), he was frequently partnered with Veronica Lake (1946). Ladd also co-starred in twelve films with William Bendix.

Alan Ladd passed away on January 29, 1964, in his sleep at his home. His butler reported seeing Ladd on his bed at 10 a.m.; when he arrived at 3:30 p.m., Ladd was dead.

His death was ruled accidental owing to cerebral edema induced by an acute overdose of alcohol, a barbiturate, and two tranquilisers comprising at least two depressants.

Ladd had chronic sleeplessness and relied on sleeping medications and drinks to fall asleep. While he had not taken a lethal dose of any one drug, the combination appears to have resulted in a fatal interaction. Suicide was ruled out.

He was laid to rest in Glendale, California’s Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
