Who Was Alan Hevesi?
Alan George Hevesi was a politician and public servant whose career was faced with legal troubles.
Hevesi’s political career commenced in 1971 when he became a New York State Assemblyman, a position he held with distinction until 1993.
He assumed the role of New York City Comptroller from 1994 to 2001.
In 2002, Hevesi, a member of the Democratic Party, reached the pinnacle of his political career by being elected as the New York State Comptroller.

In 2006, Hevesi resigned from office as part of a plea bargain with the Albany County Court.

The resignation was linked to his use of state employees for the care of his ailing wife, leading to legal repercussions.
In February 2007, he faced a $5,000 fine and a permanent ban from holding elective office. Remarkably, he avoided incarceration and probation, highlighting the complexities of his legal case.
The saga continued as Hevesi pleaded guilty to corruption charges related to a “pay to play” scheme involving the New York State Pension Fund.
On April 15, 2011, he was sentenced to one to four years in prison.
Hevesi died on November 9, 2023, after succumbing to Lewy body dementia at a care home in East Meadow, New York. He was aged 83.
