While attending the television arts program at Ryerson Institute of Technology in 1954, he honed his skills and developed a passion for the industry, even though he did not graduate. He first came into the public eye by co-hosting the popular Canadian children’s television series, “Razzle Dazzle,” which ran from 1961 to 1964. In the late 1960s, Hamel took on the role of host for two syndicated game shows, “Wedding Party” (1968) and “Anniversary Game” (1969). It was during the latter show that he met Suzanne Somers, a pivotal encounter that led to their eventual marriage in 1977.

The late 1970s marked a significant chapter in Hamel’s career when he hosted “The Alan Hamel Show,” a daytime talk show on CTV. His talents as a host earned him the distinction of being dubbed “Canada’s leading TV talk show host” by People magazine. During this period, he also ventured into American television briefly, hosting the “People” television series on CBS in 1978.

After stepping down as the host in 1980, the show continued under different names, including “The Alan Thicke Show” and Don Harron’s eponymous talk show.
