Hussein al-Zawahiri is the youngest sibling of Ayman al-Zawahiri, an Egyptian-born physician and theologian who was the leader of terrorist group al-Qaeda from June 2011 until July 2022, when he was killed in Afghanistan.

Hussein was one of 14 people subjected to extraordinary rendition by the CIA prior to the 2001 declaration of a War on Terror.

He was captured in Malaysia, and renditioned to Egypt.

As a result of having no known connection to terrorism, other than that he was the younger brother of militant leader Ayman al-Zawahiri, he was released in 2000.

His brother Ayman al-Zawahiri succeeded Osama bin Laden following his death in Pakistan, and was earlier a senior member of Islamist organizations which led attacks in Asia, Africa, North America and Europe.

Ayman was killed in a counter-terrorism operation carried out by the CIA in the Afghan capital Kabul on Sunday July 31, 2022.

US President Joe Biden said he had given the final approval for the “precision strike” after months of planning.

Mr Biden further said Zawahiri’s killing will bring closure to families of the nearly 3,000 victims of the 2001 attacks in which hijackers crashed passenger jets into landmark buildings in New York and Washington – including two skyscrapers in Manhattan.
