Alwin Lopez Jarreau, fondly known as Al Jarreau, was not just a celebrated American singer and songwriter; he was a musical prodigy whose roots were deeply embedded in the harmonies of love and faith fostered by his parents, Pearl and Emile Jarreau.

Born on March 12, 1940, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Al Jarreau was the fifth child in a family of six. His father, Emile Alphonse Jarreau, was not only a dedicated Seventh-day Adventist Church minister but also a gifted singer.
Al’s mother, Pearl (Walker) Jarreau, played an essential role in the family’s musical ensemble, serving as a church pianist. Together, the Jarreau family found joy in singing, often performing together in church concerts and benefit events.
Al and his mother even graced the stage at PTA meetings, leaving an indelible mark on the community with their musical talents. Al Jarreau’s early years were marked by a passion for music and a commitment to leadership.
He emerged as a student council president and represented Lincoln High School as a Badger Boys State delegate. During Boys State, he garnered significant acclaim by being elected governor—a testament to his charisma and leadership skills.

As he pursued higher education at Ripon College, Al continued to let his musical talents shine. Singing with a group called the Indigos, he showcased his vocal prowess.
In 1962, he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in psychology. Taking a step further, Al earned a master’s degree in vocational rehabilitation from the University of Iowa in 1964.
While working as a rehabilitation counselor in San Francisco, Al Jarreau continued to follow his passion for music. He moonlighted with a jazz trio led by George Duke, laying the foundation for what would become an illustrious career.
In 1967, he teamed up with acoustic guitarist Julio Martinez, forming a duo that captivated audiences at the intimate Sausalito night club, Gatsby’s.
This early success fueled Al Jarreau’s decision to wholeheartedly embrace singing as his full-time career, setting the stage for the remarkable journey that lay ahead.
