Takarada is best known for his role in the 1954 film Godzilla.

Toho Studios announced Takarada’s death in a tweet on Thursday, saying, ‘We are saddened to hear of Akira Takarada’s passing. ‘May his memory continue to inspire many Godzilla fans.’ There was no mention of a death date or cause of death.
Takarada was best known for his role as Hideto Ogata in the original Godzilla film, in which his character assisted the Japanese Coast Guard after the first ship sunk by the monster sent out an SOS call.

Takarada remained connected to the blockbuster Godzilla franchise throughout his career, appearing in the 1956 American version, titled Godzilla: King of the Monsters, which also starred Raymond Burr, as well as 1964’s Mothra vs. Godzilla.
He returned for the 1992 sequel and 2004’s Godzilla: Final Wars, his final major appearance in the franchise, but he did make a cameo in the 2014 film.
Takarada’s other films include the monster-themed Invasion of the Astro-Monster in 1965 and Ebirah, Horror of the Deep in 1966.
