Chenna was frequently seen as a controversial figure for helping single mothers, who have babies out of wedlock. The activist acknowledged that she received death threats several times from people who accused her of “promoting prostitution.”
She said that such unwanted pregnancies happen as a result of “unaccomplished engagement or marriage rape, or a love story built on a lie,” adding that a woman who leaves their newborn babies in the street “is one who got to a point where her mind is so messed up and she needs help.”
In 2000, the activist faced a fatwa after her appearance in an interview with Aljazeera to defend the rights of single mothers.
