Ahmad Jamal Parents: Meet Robert Smith Jones, Lottie Jones

Ahmad Jamal was an American jazz pianist, composer, and bandleader who has been active in the music industry for over six decades.

He was born on July 2, 1930, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to Robert Smith Jones and Lottie Jones. Ahmad Jamal began playing the piano at a young age.

In the 1950s, Ahmad Jamal moved to Chicago and formed his own trio, which became very popular in the jazz scene. His music was characterized by his innovative use of space and silence, which gave his compositions a distinctive, minimalist quality.

His most famous album, “At the Pershing: But Not for Me,” was recorded live at the Pershing Hotel in Chicago in 1958 and became a huge commercial success, making him one of the best-selling jazz pianists of all time.

Ahmad Jamal also won numerous awards, including a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2017, and has been recognized for his contributions to the jazz genre.

His music has been highly influential, inspiring generations of jazz pianists and musicians. Ahmad Jamal passed away in Ashley Falls, Mass., after a battle with prostate cancer on April 16 2023, at the age of 92. His death was confirmed by his daughter Sumayah Jamal.
