Afia Pokua, a prominent broadcast journalist, has suggested that the delay in Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia naming his running mate for the upcoming elections is directly linked to the ongoing issue of ‘Dumsor’ in the country.

According to Pokua, who works with Despite Media, the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has already selected Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as Napo, as Dr. Bawumia’s running mate.

However, she believes that the NPP is hesitant to make the announcement until they resolve the challenges posed by the intermittent power outages.

“Bawumia cannot name his running mate because of Dumsor. This is why I believe Nana Addo owes Bawumia an apology. If they hadn’t dismissed Agyarko, he would have been a strong candidate for the position,” Pokua asserted.

She pointed out that Napo, currently serving as Minister of Energy, cannot be announced as running mate amidst the Dumsor crisis, which has become a significant issue affecting Ghanaian households and businesses.

“The NPP is facing a critical problem caused by Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. Bawumia’s challenges are largely due to decisions made by the President,” she added.

Pokua also suggested alternative candidates but acknowledged that each has their own complications. She highlighted the complexities involved in selecting a running mate under current circumstances.

“The NPP is strategizing due to these challenges. They are unable to hold rallies and are instead focusing on personal interactions to connect with voters,” she concluded.

Pokua’s comments reflect growing concerns over the impact of Dumsor on political decisions and the upcoming electoral strategies of the NPP.
