In 2008, doctors discovered a cancerous tumour on his spine, which caused him to retire from basketball. While his disease was in remission, he got a master’s degree in sports marketing.

After school, he went ahead to run entertainment and sports consultancy companies in Berlin, as well as work as an agent for NBA guard, Dennis Schroder. Ever since the diagnosis, he has been battling the disease on and off.

Although the family of Ademola Okulaja have not confirmed the cause of his death, there are speculations that he died of cancer because he was battling it for a year.
